2 cups flour
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup (1 1/2 stick) butter, softened
1/3 cup molasses
3 tbsp milk
1 egg
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/2 ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/8 tsp salt
Sugar for rolling
Combine flour, 1 cup sugar, butter, molasses, milk, egg, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Beat at low speed using an electirc mixer for 2 to 3 minutes. Mix until well blended, scraping the bowl often. Cover and refrigerate until firm enough to handle, at least 4 hours or overnight. Preheat oven to 350 F. Shape rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into 1 inch balls. Roll in sugar. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until slightly firm to the touch. Transfer cookies to wire racks to cool completely. Yield: about 4 dozen cookies
